Inquiry:   What specific situations are you aware of where emptiness appears in your life?

Personal Integration: This practice can be done alone or with a friend, lover, or counselor. Take one to five minutes or longer to contemplate and answer the question. When done with another, it is essential that the listener remains neutral and encourages you by repeating this inquiry as needed to help maintain focus. Awareness of emptiness can be very subtle and appear in quick flashes.  Look for it in places when you are alone, when you lack tenderness, empathy, connection with others, in your sex life, at a party, when you don’t feel like talking etc.  It could occur when we don’t receive what we need.  It might be helpful to reflect back on your childhood when you couldn’t make a connection with members of your family, and it left you feeling flat.  See if you can be relaxed as you look for this often suppressed part of yourself, and appreciate that you may be opening new doors to ultimately being fulfilled in areas you now feel empty.

Inquiry 2:  As you access places of emptiness inside you, ask yourself, “what needs or qualities does this emptiness reflect that are absent?

Personal Integration 2: Follow the same instructions as above in the monologue or repeating question format.  It is so important to recognize that the purpose of discovering emptiness inside isn’t a masochistic exercise.  The purpose is both to learn to care for our emptiness, and also to discern what it is missing.  This is like a mother taking care of her sad child.  You ask your emptiness in a tender way, “what is it that you are needing?”. How can I support you in attaining it?  (refer to Introspective Guides on feelings and needs)   As you start to identify qualities and states like intimacy, love, fulfillment, continue to ask yourself how you can take the next concrete step toward this.  Don’t be discouraged if you don’t know where to start as this only indicates that you haven’t given it enough attention. Reassure yourself that you are committed to take care of yourself.   It might even be helpful to visualize who can help you move in the directions in life you want..   Commit yourself as much as possible to finding and dedicating yourself to these specific attitudes and actions..  Be as concrete in the present and in the near future as possible.

Inquiry 3:  Can you visualize both your fulfillment and emptiness coexisting at the same time?

Personal Integration 3:  Follow the same instructions as above in the monologue or repeating question format.  When you become aware of glimpses of being inspired or courageous, or fulfilled in certain ways, it is vital to realize that this is a life long practice. Even though you are able to see actions or attitudes that may potentially transform your emptiness into fulfillment, it is rarely instantaneous.   For most of us it is best if we can  stay aware of our both our visionary side that sees the qualities and needs, and also stay aware of where our emptiness resides.  This is a state of great maturity to be visionary and not stay absorbed in our challenging feelings, In Humanistic Spirituality, this coexistence is as a ?c?entral tenet in spiritual maturity, and living a balanced and fulfilling life. It is often necessary to encourage our self by repeating words like “have the courage to stay aware of your emptiness so that you have a better chance of being fulfilled.” (refer to article in the reading section on “Bridging the Human and the Divine”)
